The closer the line gets to zero, the closer Japan is to the world record; when it rises, the world record is pulling away. The gap is plotted at every record change — world or national — so the line always reflects the gap at that moment.

The story of the record

The record, step by step

The 1000m sits between the 800m and 1500m. Sebastian Coe ran 2:12.18 in 1981, and Noah Ngeny lowered the men's world record to 2:11.96 in 1999. That mark stood for nearly 27 years before Emmanuel Wanyonyi ran 2:11.83 in Monaco in 2026 (pending ratification). The women's world record is Svetlana Masterkova's 2:28.98 from 1996.

Japan's progression

The men's Japanese record moved from Fumikazu Kobayashi's 2:19.65 in 2005 to Kentaro Usuda's 2:18.69 in 2022, before Ko Ochiai ran 2:15.24 in Monaco in 2026. On the women's side, Nozomi Tanaka improved Miho Sugimori's 2:41.08 from 2002 twice, running 2:37.72 in 2021 and 2:37.33 in 2022.
