The record, step by step
The men's 3000m begins with Saïd Aouita's 7:29.45 in 1989. Daniel Komen's 7:20.67 from 1996 then stood for 28 years, until Jakob Ingebrigtsen ran 7:17.55 in 2024. The women's world record is Wang Junxia's 8:06.11 from 1993, which still stands.
Japan's progression
The men's record passed from Toshinari Takaoka to Suguru Osako, and in 2026 Nagiya Mori broke Osako's 2014 mark to set the current 7:38.98. Nozomi Tanaka lowered the women's record several times from 2020, reaching 8:34.09 in 2024.
