The record, step by step
The men's 5000m fell steadily from Dick Quax's 13:12.87 in 1977. Kenenisa Bekele's 12:37.35 from 2004 then held for 16 years, until Joshua Cheptegei ran 12:35.36 in Monaco in 2020. In 2025 Beatrice Chebet ran 13:58.06 to become the first woman under 14 minutes.
Japan's progression
The men's record passed through Toshinari Takaoka and Takayuki Matsumiya before Suguru Osako ran 13:08.40 in 2015, which still stands. Nozomi Tanaka took over the women's record from runners such as Kayoko Fukushi, lowering it to 14:29.18 in 2023.
