10 km Road

World and Japan records, men and women — the progressions, the gap between them, and the full timeline.

Separate from track 10,000m. Women's records use mixed races; Japan records follow JAAF recognition. The men's 28:05 is a JAAF-recognized en-route mark (J), distinct from WA recognition (W). History is a source-verified selection; Japan starts with one mark per gender. Recognition and coverage

The closer the line gets to zero, the closer Japan is to the world record; when it rises, the world record is pulling away. The gap is plotted at every record change — world or national — so the line always reflects the gap at that moment.

The story of the record

One distance, two disciplines

Road 10km and track 10,000m have separate records. The distance is identical, but road surfaces, turns and elevation differ from 25 laps of a 400m track. Women's records here use the mixed-race category, separate from women-only races.

World records and coverage

The world records are Yomif Kejelcha's 26:31 in Castellon on 16 February 2025 and Agnes Jebet Ngetich's 28:46 in Valencia on 14 January 2024. Both are supported by World Athletics ratification releases. Kejelcha's mark was ratified on 1 June 2026; charts retain the race date. Annulled records are excluded.

Initial coverage is a verified selection starting in 2009 for men and 2017 for women. Japan currently has one verified mark per gender. Earlier history has not been reconstructed without sufficient evidence. These charts are not a complete history or a timeline of ratification announcements.

Japan's recognition categories

JAAF distinguishes Atsushi Sato's 28:05 in Udine on 14 October 2007 (J) from the WA-recognized category (W). This page uses the JAAF-recognized 28:05 for comparisons. Although recorded en route, it is explicitly listed by JAAF as the Japanese 10km record. The women's mixed-race record is Rino Goshima's 30:55 in Castellon on 26 February 2023.

Prague's organizer reported Shunya Kikuchi's 28:07 on 5 September 2026 as an eight-second Japanese record improvement. That comparison is against 28:15, not Sato's 28:05. The categories are not merged, so Kikuchi's mark has not been inserted into this progression. Information checked on 6 September 2026.
